Supply Chain Risk Alerts
Active disruptions, tightening signals, and oversupply opportunities
TiO₂ supply tightening — Chinese production curbs
Environmental compliance shutdowns at two major Shandong facilities are reducing TiO₂ output by an estimated 8–12% through Q3 2026. Coatings formulators should consider building safety stock.
European chlor-alkali plant closures driving NaOH spike
Three European chlor-alkali plants have announced temporary shutdowns citing energy costs. NaOH availability in the EU market is down ~15% MoM with price up 9%. Buyers should secure forward contracts.
Biodiesel feedstock shift impacts glycerin supply
A shift toward palm-free and waste-based biodiesel in South-East Asia is reducing by-product glycerin output. USP-grade glycerin is seeing modest tightening; vegetable-sourced grades most affected.
Acetic acid prices rise on methanol feedstock costs
Rising natural gas prices in Asia are pushing methanol costs higher, which is flowing through to acetic acid pricing. Expect continued upward pressure unless LNG spot prices ease.
Niacinamide oversupply continues — opportunity to restock
Chinese niacinamide capacity additions from 2025 expansions continue to suppress global pricing. Buyers have an opportunity to lock in favorable contract pricing through H2 2026.
HA prices at multi-year lows amid capacity expansion
Hyaluronic acid pricing has fallen over 11% YoY as Chinese fermentation capacity has grown faster than cosmetic demand. Formulators entering the HA market will find favorable economics.
Regulatory Radar
Upcoming and active regulatory changes affecting specialty chemicals globally
REACH Annex XIV — Phenoxyethanol restriction (cosmetics)
The EU is finalizing restrictions on phenoxyethanol concentration in cosmetic products intended for children under 3 years. Maximum proposed limit: 0.4% in body lotion/cream/oil; 0.6% for other rinse-off.
EPA TSCA — Proposed rule on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
EPA is proposing significant reporting and recordkeeping requirements for PFAS under TSCA Section 8(a)(7). Chemical manufacturers and importers must report PFAS use data going back to 2011.
CLP Regulation — New hazard classification for TiO₂ inhalable dust
TiO₂ powder is now classified as a Category 2 carcinogen by inhalation under EU CLP. Labelling and SDS updates are mandatory. This does not affect TiO₂ in liquid formulations.
BIS amendment — ISI mark mandatory for select specialty coatings
Bureau of Indian Standards is extending mandatory ISI certification to anti-corrosive coatings and marine coatings sold in India, affecting both domestic manufacturers and importers.
GHS Rev. 10 — Updated hazard communication requirements
The 10th revised edition of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals introduces changes to aerosol classification and new precautionary statements. National adoption timelines vary.
